PHOENIX CHILD AND FAMILY WELFARE SOCIETY
The Phoenix Child and Family Welfare Society requests funding for a building extension and maintenance costs to its Sahara Shelter for abused women and children and also for Training and Capacity building of its staff.

The Sahara Shelter in Phoenix, Durban, has been expanded to accommodate an additional 12 residents. The new facilities – built at a cost of R1.8-million with help from the Sibaya Community Trust.
The Sahara Shelter, established in 1994, is a project of the Phoenix Child and Family Welfare Society which has more than 30 years experience in providing social services such as child protection programmes, family preservation and reunification; encompassing preventative, developmental and therapeutic components.
Sahara is a short-term shelter specifically for abused women and their children, providing accommodation, meals, care plans, counseling and skills development. Its doors are open to victims of domestic violence who are admitted to the centre through the SAPS or other welfare organizations.
The expansion project – made possible with an investment of R1.3-million from the Trust and R500 000 raised by the centre though its own fund raising initiatives – means that the centre can now double the number of people it can accommodate to 24.
